How to play

4 moves, one single point

The precision of a throw, now captured in the strategic roll of the dice. Challenge your opponent in an epic duel of accuracy and strategy.

1

Place the jack

Inside the red frame at the top: columns 2 to 5, rows 14 to 18. It is the target for the whole round.

2

Roll and throw

The directional die gives the column, the throw dice say how far the boule travels.

3

Play your five boules

It is always the player furthest from the jack who throws. Or you call a knock-out and clear your rival away.

4

Take the point

Every boule closer to the jack than all of your opponent's is one point. The game goes to 13.

The dice in the box

8 dice, three roles

Every die has a precise job: one measures the throw, one gives the direction, one settles the knockout shot.

6Throw diceThe first one starts the boule from row 6. Then the player decides how many more to roll, and the boule advances by the total.
1Directional dieIt gives the number of the column the boule enters the court on, from 1 to 6.
1Knockout dieIt says whether a knock-out works. The same number counts differently depending on the type you called.

The court in a box

A perforated board instead of the court

The playing field becomes a perforated board: each sphere locks into the hole where it stops and stays there, just like a bowl on the court. From there you measure who lies closest to the jack.

Six columns across and fourteen rows in depth, numbered 6 to 19. The red frame at the top, rows 14 to 18, is where the jack is placed. Around it every piece has its own slot: Player A's and Player B's spheres, the jack, the throw dice, the directional die and the knockout die.

The rules

How you get to 13 points

Play one against one, or two against two. Every boule that comes to rest closer to the jack than all of your opponent's is worth one point. First to 13 wins the game.

The turn

  1. Place the jack

Chance decides who starts. The jack goes on a column from 2 to 5, never on 1 or 6, and on a row from 14 to 18: the red frame at the top of the board.

  2. Choose the lane

Whoever placed the jack throws first. The directional die gives the column number, from 1 to 6.

  3. The first push

A single throw die, and the boule sets off from row 6: roll a 3 and it stops on row 9.

  4. Finish the movement

The player decides how many more throw dice to roll, and moves the boule forward by the total. All the strategy sits here: more dice, more ground, less control.

Then the opponent throws. From there on it is always the player whose boule lies furthest from the jack who plays, until they are closest again: at that moment the point passes to the other player, who starts throwing.

Knock-out shots

You may call a knock-out shot whenever you like, as long as you declare it first. Two per turn at most. The number you roll is read according to the type you called.

Traditional
Success1234
Failure56

On success the opponent's boule nearest the jack and the player's own both leave the game. On failure only the player's boule goes.

Special
Success12
Failure345
The six6

On a 6 the player's boule takes the place of the opponent's, which is out of the game for good.

On the jack
Success12
Failure3456

On success the round is cancelled and starts again, the score staying as it is. On failure the player's boule leaves the game.

Hits and ties

  • A boule hits the opponent's on the same column and on a higher row: it takes its place, and the boule that was hit moves two rows forward.
  • A boule hits the jack: it takes its place, and the jack moves two rows forward.
  • Two boules end up the same distance from the jack: no point is awarded and the last player throws again.
